Catasetum schmidtianum ‘Baker’s troll’ AM/AOS x Ctsm. schmidtianum ‘SVO’

Catasetum schmidtianum ‘Baker’s Troll’ AM/AOS

This has got to be one of the most fascinating species I have yet to encounter in the Catasetum alliance and this is an outcross between two of the best. This is a very rare species from Brazil that is very hard to find and incredibly rewarding to cultivate. The species is in the same family type as that of saccatum, incurvum etc, but has the most interesting and unique flower appearance of them all. Flowers can be slightly variable but all have been exceptional! The genetics used as stated are excellent and both parents are very dark and highly floriferous.

Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Cottonmouth’ AM/AOS x (Clo. Jumbo Lace x Ctsm. Orchidglade)
Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Cottonmouth’ AM/AOS Clowesetum Jumbo Lace x Catasetum Orchidglade First to bloom

This is a very impressive and complex line of breeding that has proven to be exceptional. Really getting into some advanced breeding here but both plants have a very similar flowering styles that combined should be over the top outstanding. The Fdk. Dark Daze is exceptional and was awarded an 86 pt AM/AOS for superior flower quality. The Clowesetum is really impressive from all angles and flowers on nice draping flower spikes with large very colorful blooms. Really excited about this one and the goal was to create a plant that is more compact, blooms with long spikes holding large long lasting and highly colorful flowers that remain flat and are fragrant. The few that have flowered have had dark petals with a mottled lip.

Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Cottonmouth’ AM/AOS x Catasetum saccatum ‘Rogue Orchids’
Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Cottonmouth’ AM/AOS Catasetum saccatum ‘Rogue Orchids’ First to bloom

Here is another new complex hybrid that should be really great. Fdk. dark daze ‘Cottonmouth’ AM/AOS flowers with very long spikes, holding dozens of flowers that are large and have excellent shape/arrangement. Catasetum saccatum is one of my favorite species of CTSM, and the parent used has consistently, over many years produced long arching spikes holding on occasion over 20 flowers. The blooms are very dark and have a large ivory colored lip that looks like a mouth with a frilly edge surrounding the perimeter. Both plants are exceptional and the goal is to make massive black flowers with the large frilly type lip of the saccatum.

Mormodes Wild Rainbow ‘Priscilla’ HCC/AOS x Mormodes Nitty Gritty ‘Red & gold’
Mormodes andicolla x rolfeana ‘Priscilla’ Mormodes Nitty Gritty ‘Red & Gold’ First To Bloom

Here is a new Mormodes hybrid that will very likely be” out of this world” impressive. This is an outcross between the 2 best Mormodes hybrids I have seen. These plants both flower consistently, with 2-3 flower spikes at a time, holding upwards of 15-20 flowers per spike. The color of the flowers can only be described as absolutely stunning and both plants have blooms that are also highly fragrant. Mormodes are my favorite species from the genus but often times can be challenging to keep for long periods of time; these 2 parents are exceptions and are very robust. This cross has great potential in every avenue and should not be missed! Large rainbow colored flowers with lips that sparkle.

Catasetum rectangulare ‘Baker’s spotted cheetah’ AM/AOS Catasetum gladiatorum ‘Baker’s flying squid’ First To Bloom

Here is a new and wild Catasetum cross that has been just incredible!!! Catasetum rectangulare blooms with upwards of 50+ flowers per stem and will often flower up to 6 times per season. Catasetum gladiatorum blooms on long 18″ inflorescences with around 15-20 flowers that are very similar in color to rectangulare but has a frilly pink lip. Ctsm. rectangulare has already proven to pass along the genetic traits of highly floriferous offspring with very high flower counts. Mormodia painted desert ‘Rogue Red’ x Catasetum gladiatorum ‘flying squid’
Mormodia painted desert ‘Rogue Red’ Catasetum gladiatorum ‘Baker’s flying squid’ First to bloom

Here is a new Fredclarkeara hybrid that should be just wild! This most impressive genus (Fredclarkeara), has produced exceptional complex Catasetinae hybrids. Mormodia painted desert has proven to be dominant both in shape and floral display with past Fdk. hybrids. The Catasetums typically play a significant role in color and the shape of the lip. The Catasetum gladiatorum flowers with very long straight spikes holding upwards of a dozen or more flowers that are striped and have a wild squid like lip. The desire here is to create a new Fredclarkeara line of breeding with flowers that are spotted/striped and have frilly lips. Very strong seedlings!

Mormodia Painted Desert ‘Rogue Red’ x Catasetum J and R solar ‘chocolate dragon’
Mormodia painted desert ‘Rogue Red’ Catasetum dragons teeth x Catasetum fimbriatum v. morrenianum First To Bloom

This relatively new Fredclarkeara hybrid has proven itself to be over the top outstanding. These have flowered out to be very similar if not an improvement over the well known and most impressive Fdk. Black Lace. The size of the Catasetum flower used is much larger than the straight fimbriatum variety, has the same dark coloration and does not reflex. These are incredibly difficult hybrids to make and as it stands now, there has not been a bad Fredclarkeara made. This combination has been golden and these have been exceptional. The flowers range from deep burgundy to jet black, large in size with frilly black lips. The plants have been very robust and highly floriferous flowering several times per year and begin flowering at the end of summer all the way through February.

Mormodes Virgen de Valle ‘Purple Devil’ x Mormodes hookeri ‘Fuzzy Beast’
Mormodes hookeri ‘Baker’s fuzzy beast’ Mormodes virgen de valle ‘Baker’s purple devil’ First To Bloom

Here is a new and very exciting Mormodes cross that has been outstanding. The primary parent behind this hybrid is Mormodes hookeri which in my opinion is one of the absolute best Mormodes species. Unlike the species however these have proven themselves much easier to cultivate. The flowers on these have been absolutely spectacular ranging from light red spotted blooms to dark red flowers with fuzzy lips. Flowers are also highly fragrant.

Here is a new and very impressive Catasetum hybrid. Both of these plants are outstanding! Ctsm. Brent’s Black Hawk has proven to be an excellent parent and this particular awarded clone blooms with incredibly long spikes holding upwards of 30 very dark flowers per stem. The Ctsm. Chuck Taylor has excellent blood red coloration and is compact growing. Both plants are highly floriferous, blooming 3-4 times per year. Ctsm. lucis ‘Dana’s bird of Paradise’ AM/AOS x Ctsm. sanguineum ‘Dark Dragon’
Catasetum lucis ‘Dana’s bird of paradise’ AM/AOS Catasetum saguineum ‘Dark Dragon’ First to bloom

Here is a very impressive Catasetum hybrid that is a natural hybrid, very rare, that occurs in Venezuela. This hybrid is incredibly vigorous and flowers with very tall spikes, very similar to Ctsm. lucis and can be up to 3 ft tall. The flowers are similar in shape to sanguineum but often hold the color of lucis and have long lasting highly fragrant male flowers. The parents used are absolutely exceptional with the Catasetum lucis holding an Award of Merit for exceptional quality. The Ctsm. sanguineum used is my best and is a very robust plant that flowers on tall spikes with large very well arranged dark flowers. These will be absolutely outstanding.

Fdk. Dark Daze ‘Priscilla’ AM/AOS x Ctsm. lucis ‘Dana’s bird of paradise’ AM/AOS
Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Priscilla’ AM/AOS Catasetum lucis ‘Dana’s bird of paradise’ AM/AOS

Here is a new and very exciting cross that should be outstanding. I have yet to see a Fredclarkeara crossed back onto a Catasetum that wasn’t impressive. Considering how truly outstanding both these plants are, this cross should be exceptional. These very likely could bloom out to be green spotted flowers, should be highly fragrant and long lasting, up to several months. One other nice aspect about this direction of breeding is Catasetum lucis has proven to be very dominant as it pertains to producing upright flower spikes and this is an attempt to create a new Fredclakeara that blooms on long arching spikes that flower near vertical. These seedlings have proven incredibly robust.

Fdk. Dark Daze ‘Priscilla’ AM/AOS x (Ctsm. pileatum imperialis x Donna Wise)
Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Priscilla’ AM/AOS Ctsm. pileatum imperialis x Donna Wise

Here is a cross that really has great potential and is made with two truly exceptional parents. This will produce very large Fredclarkara shaped flowers with likely massive red lips. The Catasetum used for this cross is exceptional and begins flowering once the new growth begins and flowers many times prior to going dormant. The goal here is to produce large, dark blooms on a plant that will flower 3-4 times per year with long lasting flowers.

Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Priscilla’ AM/AOS x Catasetum osculatum ‘sweet lips’
Fredclarkeara Dark Daze ‘Priscilla’ AM/AOS Catasetum Osculatum ‘sweet lips’

The Dark Daze flower blooms with spikes that can reach over 2′ in length with upwards of 20-30 flowers per stem. Catasetum osculatum ‘sweet lips’ is quite possibly in my opinion the top 3 best Catasetum that I own and has very large, beautifully colored flowers that bloom on long flower spikes with perfect arrangement and flowers multiple times per year. This cross should be nothing short of absolutely spectacular as these advanced crosses generally take the color from the Catasetum. Really impressive and have very high expectations for this cross.

Mo. painted desert ‘Rogue Red’ X Ctsm. dentigrinum ‘mini rogue’
Mormodia painted desert ‘Rogue Orchids’ Catasetum dentigrinum ‘Rogue Tiger’ First to bloom

Here is a new Fredclarkeara hybrid that should over the top outstanding. This is my first attempt to make miniature Fredclareara’s and am very optimistic about this cross. There literally still in my opinion has not been a poor Fredclarkeara produced, they have all in their own way been just magnificent. The Mo. painted desert used has already proven itself an outstanding parent and combined with this most impressive miniature Catasetum the results should be nothing short of spectacular. The dentigrinum is the best I have seen and blooms with very a very high volume of flowers that remain flat and have outstanding shape and coloration. Both of these hybrids are smaller plants and this should create a highly floriferous miniature FDK. with extremely high flower counts and really impressive colorful flowers.

Here is a new cross that should be an absolute show stopper! As it pertains to excellent genetics, it does not get much better than this within the Catasetinae alliance. The Fdk. Frank Smith used has some of the most magnificent, large jet black flowers I have seen that last for upwards of 2 months and are highly fragrant. The Catasetum Fong Sing is an absolute masterpiece with massive dark flowers with a huge frilly lip that bloom on tall stems. Expect truly excellent large black flowers that are long lasting, fragrant and bloom on long stems.

Cycnoches Dark Swan ‘Rogue Orchids’ x Cyc. Swan Cascade ‘chocolate sensation’
Cycnoches Dark Swan ‘Rogue Orchids’ Cyc. Swan Cascade First to bloom

Here is a new and very exciting advanced Cycnoches hybrid. The parents used in breeding this cross are some of the most magnificent Cycnoches hybrids I have yet to flower. The chrorage x Richard Brandon flowers with large heavily spotted flowers, up to 10 per stem that are nothing short of stunning. The swan Cascade is also exceptional and blooms with dozens of light red/brown flowers that are highly fragrant. This cross will likely have very dark colorful flowers with spots and produce a large volume of flowers that will very likely be highly fragrant. This cross is truly exciting and the seedlings have grown with intense vigor. The few that have flowered have had very dark chocolate blooms with large bold markings.
